Deze opstelling is aangegeven op schets 4.
De stelling ten W. van Maubeuge wordt als volgt beschreven:
In view of the possibility of my being driven from the Mons
position, I had previously ordered a position in rear to be recon
noitred. This position rested on the fortress of Maubeuge on the
right and extended west to Jenlain, south-east of Valenciennes,
on the left. The position was reported difficult to hold, because
standing crops and [buildings made the siting of trenches very
difficult and limited the field of fire in many important localities.
It nevertheless afforded a few good artillery positions.
Het Fransche communiqué van 25 Augustus zegt van de hier be
schreven gebeurtenissen
„A 1' ouest de la Meuse, 1' armée anglaise, qui se trouvait a
notre gauche, a été attaquée par les Allemands. Admirable sous
le feu, elle a résisté a 1' ennemi avec son impassibilité ordinaire.
Sur 1' ordre du générai Joffre nos troupes et les troupes an-
glaises ont pris position sur les emplacements de couverture,
qu'elles n'eussent pas quittés si l'admirable effort des Beiges ne
nous avait pas permis d' entrer en Belgique".
Door het Duitsche Hoofdkwartier wordt ter zake niets anders
medegedeeld, dan het hiervoren op blz. 208 reeds aangehaalde.
Niettegenstaande de vlakke toon van deze mededeelingen blijkt
de Britsche bevelhebber toch den toestand vrij donker in te zien.
Verderop in zijn Rapport deelt hij het volgende mede:
On the 24th the French Cavalry Corps, consisting of three
divisions, under General Sordêt, had been in billets north of
Avesnes. On my way back from Bavai, which was my „Poste
de Commandement" during the fighting of the 23rd and 24th,
I visited General Sordêt, and earnestly requested his co-operation
and support. He promised to obtain sanction from his Army
Commander to act on my left flank, but said that his horses

Het is overigens opvallend in dezen door deFranschen zoo trotsch „guerre
anonyme" genoemden oorlog, dat, zoodra er aan de natie eene zeer ongun
stige mededeeling moest worden gedaan, wel een naam genoemd werd,
alsof een zondebok werd gereed gehouden. De bom sprong echter an
ders; het Caillauxtistische ministerie trad weldra af.
