most difficult and dangerous operation.
Fortunately the enemy had himself suffered too heavily to
engage in an energetic pursuit.
1 cannot close the brief account of this glorious stand of
the British troops without putting on record my deep apprecia
tion of the valuable services rendered by General Sir Horace
Smith-Dorrien.
1 say without hesitation that the saving of the left wing of
the army under my command on the morning of August 26th
could never have been accomplished unless a commander of
rare and unusual coolness, intrepidity, and determination had been
present to personally conduct the operation.
Het ochtend-communiqué van den 27sten bracht naast het bericht
van de Fransche ministerie-wisseling de mededeeling: „Les lignes
franco-anglaises ont été légèrement ramenées en arrière; la rési-
stance continue".
Het middag-bulletin zegt omtrent de beschreven gebeurtenissen
„Les événements d'hier dans la région du Nord n'ontaaucun
degré compromis ni modifié les dispositions prises en vue du
développement ultérieur des opérations".
en dat van den volgenden dag:
„L'armée anglaise, attaquée par des forces trés supérieures
en nombre, a dü, après une brillante résistance, se reporter un
peu en arrière. A sa droite nos armées ont maintenu leur po
sition".
Het Duitsche Hoofdkwartier bericht onder 27 Augustus: het Leger
van Gen. V. Kluck heeft het Britsche Leger „heute" (hier zal wel
den 26sten bedoeld zijn, want het Britsche heeft na dien dag in
Augustus niet noemenswaard meer gevochten) „südwestlich Mau-
beuge unter Umfassung erneut angegriffen". En in het bericht van
den 28sten heet het:
„Die englische Armee, der sich drei französische territorial-
Divisionen angeschlossen hatten, ist nördlich Saint-Quentin voil-
standig geschlagen. Sie befindet sich im vollen Rückzilge über
Saint-Quentin. Mehrere tausend Gefangenen, 7 Feldbatterien und
eine schwere Batterie sind in unsere Hande gcfallen".
