within six months. On the day w 3n Germany and Bulgaria joined
hands the wheat harvest of Bulgaua and Turkey would be free to
pour into Germany and the resources of Asia Minor where cotton
could be grown, would be available for our enemy. If at any time
during the last month the British Minister at Sofia had been able
to say we were going to raise two million more men by means ot
national service we might have found a different attitude on the
part of Bulgaria.
In het artikel „War and Government" gispt de schrijver het weinig
juiste en weinig krachtige Engelsche regeeringsbeleid Ook rs hij
slecht te spreken over den geest van verdeeldheid in Engeland. Het
feit, dat, in tijden als deze, stakingen kunnen plaats vinden, acht
hij 'een hoogst bedenkelijk verschijnsel
Engelands verdeeldheid steekt schril af tegen de eenheid van
volk en regeering in Frankrijk, Rusland en Italië.
Een groote fout der Engelsche regeering acht schrijver het met-
invoeren van den dienstplicht.
De neutralen besprekende zegt hij van ons land: „Holland demands
and receives our deepest sympathy, her position is cruel in the
extreme. If the Allies be victorious all will be well with her it
Germany, then she will have to fight. For let nobody imagine that
a tame surrender lies within the ambit of the consciousness ofThe
Dutchman. Even as the Belgian is, so is he, only more so, if that
were possible Only one thing is possible from the point of v,ew of

^National Danger and National service" is de titel van een pro-
dienstplicht artikel.
De dienstplicht wordt vooral door de trade-unions tegengehouden,
omdat sommige van deze vtreenigingen bang zijn, dat daardoor
eventueel hun machtsmiddel „Staking" in het gedrang zal komen
(de spoorweg- federatie b.v.).
We vermelden vervolgens 2 artikelen over „Seinen en een over
het dromedaris-korps van Napoleon, verder een artikel over „Dum
dums" en een over „Vliegwezen".
In het Dum-dum artikel betoogt de schrijver uitvoerig, dat het
gebruik van dunt-dums alleen te bewijzen is uit den taschvoorraad;
de veroorzaakte wonden leveren niet het minste bewijs, daar gewone
