De fenced roads" zijn voorgesteld door volle, de „unfenced
roads door stippellijnen. De „metalled roads" zijn onderscheiden
os f? !f t,usschen de ka"tlijnen (first class, 0 8; second
class, 0.6, third class, 0.4 m.M.), de eerste en tweede klasse bo
vendien oranje gekleurd. De „unmetalled roads" worden aangege
ven door dubbele lijnen op 0.3 m.M. afstand, de voetpaden door
lang gestippelde lijnen.
De onderscheiding in „fenced" en „unfenced roads" is gemaakt
uit militaire overwegingen, omdat de eerste het uitzicht belemmeren
en de vrije beweging van troepen naar het aangrenzend terrein
bemoeiehjken.
Het nut van het aangeven van eerste en tweede klasse wegen
wordtdoorbevoegde personen in twijfel getrokken. „It is often found
that the distinction made on the map between first and second class
roads has little relation to the actual condition of the road. Roads
which should be in first class condition are pulled to pieces by
heavy motor traffic, while second class roads are constantly being
brought up to first class condition Generally speaking all the
roads coloured orange are fit for motor traffic and the uncoloured
roads are not."
Op de 1 125.720 kaarten worden de eerste en tweede klasse
wegen smaller getrokken, doch ook in oranje voorgesteld. De
onderscheiding tusschen „metalled roads of the third class" en
„unmetalled roads" komt hier niet meer voor.
„So far as the half-inch maps are concerned the old classi-
ication of roads is somewhat inadequate to present day needs A
committee was formed during 1911-12 to discuss the matter...
is not possible to obtain absolute unanimity of opinion on
such a subject as the classification of roads on a map, but there
is no doubt that the classification proposed by the committee is a
good one and is an improvement on the former classification It will
