La défense se poursuit done activement a l'extérieur de front et
sur les flancs.

tegenstoot, dan wordt het inwendige van het oord voet voor voet
betwist.
b. Pour les b o i s. Analoog aan de verdediging van bewoon
de oorden. Verdediging van den rand, als bij oorden, in het voor
terrein; ook wel op eenigen afstand achter den rand. Overigens
in de binnenruimte (open gedeelte of coupures, die de vijand
moet doorschrijden). In geaccidenteerd terrein: kleine werkjes, die
de intervallen bestrijken.
ad a en b. Gelukt het den vijand het terreinvoorwerp te ver
overen, dan moet hem worden belet, eruit te deboucheeren,
waartoe te voren de noodige opstellingen worden uitgezocht (en
c. q. versterkt), tegenover den achtersten rand.
Tot zoover het Fr. Inf. R. Het best en tevens het leerzaamst
vond ik het gevecht om en in terreinvoorwerpen beschreven in het
nieuwe Eng. Inf. R. (Infantry Training, Vol. II, War, 1921).
Ik zal hieronder het voornaamste, deels onvertaald, weergeven;
de lezer vergeve mij, wegens het groote belang der zaak, mijn
wellicht te groote uitvoerigheid, waarbij ik echter zooveel mogelijk
zal vermijden in herhaling te treden.

A. Close country.
I. Algemeen, a. Generally speaking, in close country, owing
to the limitation of the field of view and of fire the employment
of art. is restricted; machine guns, on the other hand, are well
adopted for supporting inf. closely. Inf. has, under these conditions
to rely more on its own resources as the action and movements of
tanks and art. are slower and more difficult. For this reason
the machine gun and mortar become of great importance as
supporting weapons.
b. It is particularly difficult in close country for the defenders
to deliver local counter-attacks in the most effective direc
tion, or to organize converging fire against captured localities.
c. Frontages allotted to units will be less than in more open
country and reserves will be held closer to hand in order to
keep touch, prevent the enemy breaking through localities held
or to restore the local situation. On the other hand enclosed
