country will afford greater opportunities for manoeuvre and for
penetrating into the weak portions of the defense.
II. Aanval, a. The attacker must make a fuller reconnais
sance than usual.
b The use of the compass is of vital impor
tance and before the attack begins the bearing of the objective
should be made known to all officers and section-commanders
(officers, hieronder ook te verstaan de onderoffn., section-com
manders groepcomdtn).
c. The inf. must be trained in instantaneous deployment, com
bined with the immediate opening of fire.
d. Scouts in advance are more essential than ever.
e. Commanders must make arrangements to maintain touch
with units moving on their flanks (geen „view", want dat is met
altijd mogelijk). This may be done by observers or by patrols
meeting at places previously selected on the line o
advance
f. The use of arrowhead- and file formations is the best
guarantee against the natural tendency to confusion.
III. Verdediging, a. Inf. must clear the foreground and
improve the avenues of communication.
b The local immediate counter-attack becomes an even more
vital factor in defence in close country as the opportunities of
local penetration by the enemy are greater and once effected,
are more dangerous owing to the difficulties of locating the
limits of the hostile gains and of checking the movements of
his supporting troops.
B. Wood and village fighting.
I. Algemeen, a. Ze vormen als het ware magneten voor
troepen, die in hunne nabijheid opereeren. Troepen worden er
als bij instinct heen getrokken (gedekt zijn gemakkelijke nade
ring goed zichtbare aanvalspunten en gemakkelijk aan te geven
verdedigingspunten),
b. Dorpen hebben nog voor: beschutting, water en voedsel te
kunnen leveren, (zie overigens het reeds bovengenoemae ad A.)
II. A a n v a 1 b ij b o s s c h e n. a. Steeds de geheele breedte
van het bosch door de verkenners laten afpatrouilleeren.
b. Niet op toenaderingswegen of paden gaan, doch er naast
(just clear of the rides). Schuin loopende paden vlug, man voor
man, overstekenevenzoo dwarsloopende.
c. Opereeren eigen troepen ook buiten het bosch, dan in ver
band met de troepen voorwaarts gaan.
d. Meer steuntroepen dan gewoonlijk, om op alle gebeur ij
heden te zijn voorbereid. Tot het laatst een zij het kleine
reserve houden.
e. Genietroepen bij de voorste afdeelingen.
