omtrent de art., vermeld in Rev. d'art. Juli afl. Schr. gaf n. 1. daarin aan,
dat in de toekomst de art. voor het vuur op de groote afstanden wel
door bombardeervliegtuigen zou worden vervangen; de criticus echter geeft
te kennen dat z. i. beide strijdmiddelen „sont indispensables lun et 1 autre,
qui se competent l'un et l'autre, et dont une armée vraiment moderne ne

haald: „The mobile guns accompanying the inf. have an extremely difficult
task. Their very presence has the greatest moral value, both for their
inf and conversely for the enemy's- It is in close country fighting that
these forward guns will be most wanted. In such circumstances guns can
often be brought up to within a few hundred yards of an enemy s strong
point and will not be discovered until they open fire. In some cases
pack art. would be more suited for this kind of work
than field art., especially the pack howitzer with its high

protective barrage just in front of a defending inf. after the attack has
commenced, finds few supporters now. It is the duty of the inf. to deel
with the first elements of the attackers. The duty of the art. is by coun-
terpreparation and counter-offensive to inflict casualties on theenemy,
to break up concentrations, and to isolate the first waves of the at'acjc.
V.w. b. de contre-bttn vinden we vermeld: „Under the most favourable
circumstances it is calculated that a 6 inch howitzer would require about
500 rounds to knock out a hostile batt. by direct hits with destructive fire,
and the other methods are even more extravagant in ammunition herlijk
geeft Schr. aan.- „For us as soldiers the obvious duty is to prepare fords
(van gasprojectielen) use when and if we are allowed to use it. It must
be rembered that gas is the cheapest engine of destruction we know of.
It is certain that all leading nations are busy experimenting at the present
time and that gas is already a far more serious factor than it was in 18.
The outbreak of war between the leading nations will probably be heralded
bv tremendous gas attacks, which may have most serious consequences
on personel and morale". Ook van de rookprojectielen wordt gezegd s „it
will probably be used largely in future in the attack". Dit isi zeker, we
zullen voor heel rare dingen komen te staan, zonder dat wij daar tegen
over iets kunnen stellen.
The probable influence of air reconnaissance on strategy and tactics
geeft de voor-en nadeelen van de luchtvaart t. 'o. v. de strategische ver
kenning aan, stelt op den voorgrond hoe moeilijk het zalzijn om troep en-
beweging geheim te houden en dus verrassend op te treden. „On the other
hand "the air can resort to a strategem of its own in a manner 1'kely
to deceive an enemy. Thus, unwonted activity over a certain part of the
area of oprations may lead the enemy to anticipate attack where no
attack is intended". Al de voordeelen zullen echter met verkregen wor
den door een bevelhebber „who does not at the outset make a determined
effort to secure aerial supremacy, or some measure of aerial supremacy
over the forces of his enemy". T.a.v. de verkenning bij zee-operaties
stelt Schr. de verkenning door vliegtuigen boven die door onderzeebooten
opgemerkt zij echter dat er thans reeds onderzeeers zijn welke een vlieg-
tuif kunnen meevoeren, zoodat een combinatie van de twee in de toekomst
reAustralië patrol operations" geeft een beschrijving van patr. gevechten,
welke de moeite waard zijn te lezen.

eens duidelijk in het licht, dat bij den aanval het gebruik van zw. mitrs
