9. OVERZICHT BUITENLANDSCHE TIJDSCHRIFTEN.
The Army Quarterly. Octobet 1925. In „The Spanish disasters in Maroc-
co" komt een beschrijving voor van de nederlaag der Spanjaarden bij
Anual onder generaal Silvestre. Een van de oorzaken daarvoor zoekt
schrijver in de alleszins onvoldoende inlichtingen welke genoemd bevel
hebber ontving over de politieke gezindheid der Rif-stammen:
„His information must have been faulty in the extreme, The blame
however, in this respect must be shared by the „politicals" who neglected
to warn him of the growing unrest among the tribes."
Onvoldoende samenwerking dus van den kant van het civiel bestuur!
Merkwaardig is ook des schrijvers definitie„a friendly native is a native
who only shoots at you by night"!
Kapitein van den Gen. Staf van het Ned. Leger J.J.G. Baron van Voorst
tot Voorst geeft een bijdrage over: „The Netherlands-German frontier"
om eenige misvattingen in een in het Aprilnummer verschenen artikel recht
te zetten.
Een belangrijk artikel is „Intercommunication in battle. An unsolved
mystery" door „Mercury".
Daarin lezen we o. m.
„Until the artillery is provided with a suitable wireless telephone, its
efficiency is bound to suffer by failure of communication when it is most
required. This appaers to be the root of the artillery problem, and we may
expect full use to be made of any fresh invention without any change in
organization.
So far as equipment is concerned, therefore, it is suggested that every
effort should be concentrated on the production of efficient portable
wireless sets of the types required by the infantery and the artillery, and
that until these are perfected, other wireless equipment should take a
second place. As wireless telephony is very much in its infancy, there is
bound to be considerable delay before the artillery gets its telephone, but
it is none the less certain that its future efficiency is dependent on this
means of communication."
Ook wijst het artikel op het groote nut der postduiven bij een goed
gebruik van dit verbindingsmiddel.
Ook vermelden we de bijdrage „The offensive side of chemical warfare".
Schrijver wijst op het groote nadeel van gasmunitie nl. dat het
verbruik teneinde resultaten te bereiken zeer groot is. Daarom verdient
het z. i. aanbeveling de vulling der gewone projectielen gedeeltelijk uit
gaschemicaliën te doen bestaan.
„There can be little doubt that chemical shell will be used in future
operations for certain definite purposes; in a war of movements it cannot
be used extensively owing to the limits of supply, but a proportion of
chemical shell might well be included in the divisional quota of ammuni
tion supply. A point worth remembering is that a schell containing a
proportion of H. E. and chemical agents is capable of inflicting nearly
as much damage as a 100 per cent. H. E. shell, and, at the same time,
possesses the increased advantage of chemical action".
Captain O. T. Frith schrijft over Mechanical draught and field artillery".
Hierin worden resultaten vermeld die in Engeland werden bereikt mét
Fordson tractors voor veldartilleriegebruik, alhoewel de beproeving geens
zins afdoende is te noemen. Het rapport erover vermeldt:
