zelf groote risico's te loopen. Geen land is zoozeer aan luchtaanvallen
van zee uit blootgesteld als Italië. Engeland klaagt reeds over de
moeilijke positie van Londen op nauwelijks 80 km van de bewakings-
lijn wat moet men dan wel zeggen van de positie van Rome en van
die van Genua, Livorno, Napels, Palermo, Venetië en Triëst
De gebeurtenissen van den laatsten tijd in de Middellandsche Zee
en de ongerustheid, die daaruit spreekt met betrekking tot de doel
treffendheid van de klassieke strijdmethoden ter zee, zijn een diep
gaande studie waard. Dat na de duikboot ook het luchtwapen afbreuk
heeft gedaan aan de beteekenis der aan de oppervlakte varende
schepen, staat onomstootelijk vast en men kan zich onmogelijk wat
wijs maken over de mate van veiligheid der maritieme verbindingen,
die de beheersching van de zeeëngten dengene verschaft, die ze in
handen heeft.
Uit de hedendaagsche inspanning van Groot-Brittannië op financieel
en industrieel gebied ten behoeve van zijn luchtmacht valt af te leiden,
dat de leiders van het Rijk alle consequenties van een nieuwe wer
kelijkheid met ernst overwogen en ten volle aanvaard hebben.

NEW AERODROMES ALONG SARAWAK-BORNEO COAST.
Singapore (By Air Mail).
Now that the Singapore base is nearly finished, the defence auta
rkies are turning their attention to other defence projects in the region.
It is announced in Singapore that work has begun on fortification
at Penang in North Malaya, and barracks to house about 1.000 men
are to be built.
Two new Service aerodromes at Kuching and Bintulu, Sarawak,
on the coast of Borneo, are finished, and will be used for the first
time by aircraft from the carrier Eagle at the end of this month.
Work is progressing on new Service aerodromes throughout the
Malay peninsula, including one at Khota Bahru, on the East coast,
near the Siamese border.
It is also announced that the Loyal Regiment, which has been in
Shanghai, will be sent to Singapore next month, bringing the strength
of the Singapore garrison up to its strength before the Sino-Japanese
hostilities began.

Developments at Penang mean that the islands will be garrisoned
again after more than 50 years.
Guns are being placed to guard the western approach to the Straits
of Malacca leading to the Singapore base, and Penang is also to be
developed as a R.A.F. station.
The new aerodromes along the Sarawak and Borneo coast will
provide a new all-Red route from Singapore to HcngKong and will
be of the greatest value to aircraft on patrol duty in the China Sea.
The chain of aerodromes, protecting British North Borneo and
Sarawak, will be of the greatest importance in defending the Singa
