verloopen. Het heeft, daarbij aangemoedigd door Amerika om
niet tot daden over te gaan, zijn kracht gezocht in praten, veel
praten
Na zich in die mate te hebben verzwakt, dat gekozen diende
te worden tusschen de belangen in de Middellandsche Zee of die
in den Pacific, zijn de Westersche Mogendheden thans zoo ver
gekomen dat ook die keuze niet meer vrij is.
In de oogen van de Aziatische machten, China zoowel als Japan,
heeft Europa zijn aanzien verloren en schijnt het geen kracht
meer te hebben noch een beslissende stem het is even onmachtig
om de vrede te verzekeren als om een oorlog te voeren.
En dat is dan de les welke het conflict in Azië tot nu toe leert;
en dat ons tevens weer brengt naar de vraag of de oude ver
keersstroom van Europa naar zijn exploitatiegebieden en terug
daarvan ook niet den weerslag zal hebben ondervonden
B. Alvorens die banen in hunne geschiedkundige ontwikkeling
in een kort overzicht weer te geven, willen wij vooropstellen,
dat de beteekenis van de landen van De Nabije Oost steeds is
bepaald geworden door de mate, waarin zij betrokken waren in

your country. And then, when the war was over, you saidThank you very
much. Now we don't need your help any more, so we think that we will
break off the alliance." In Japan we would not treat animals as you have
