een hoofdartikel een critische beschouwing geleverd op de in het
Bataviaasch 'Nieuwsblad gepropageerde vlootuitbreiding „coüte
que coüte en nu direct". Wij ontleenen daaraan de volgende
zienswijze van de redactie van het Alg. Hbl.

when the period of danger is most acute.
„The suggestion that we should buy two battleships from the United
States is, I suppose, made seriously, but I doubt whether it would be
so regarded by the United States, which is laying out vast sums in an
urgent development of its own defence and is scarcely likely to be
prepared suddenly to weaken that in the respects suggested by Sir
Earle Page.
NO NAVAL DOCK UNTIL 1943.
„I. suppose that Sir Earle Page expects that we should have prompt
delivery of a battleship from the United States. If so, I am at a loss to
understand his suggestion that one of the new battleships should be
based on „the new naval dock in Sydney", since, on our advice, that
new naval dock in Sydney could not be completed before 1943.
„Construction of capital ships in Great Britain is also at its maximum.
Obtaining by us of a battleship in 1943 would, therefore, mean merely
a process of subtracting one from the Britisch total, the cost being
transferred to the Australian Treasury.
„As far as the rest of his remarks are concerned, all I need say is
that my Government regards itself as solely obliged to make the
defence of this country as secure as time and our financial resources
will permit, but this need not mean that we are in any way obliged
to subordinate our own considered judgment of any problem to the
effervescent enthusiasm of Sir Earle Page. After all, we are the
Government. Perhaps that is the trouble."
Wij achten den huidigen minister van oorlog, die ook op het
Indische defensiegebied zijn stem wel zal laten hooren, wel zoo
nuchter en verstandig, dat hij gewikt en gewogen heeft, maar voor
alles den doorslag heeft laten geven aan de overweging wat kan
En dan moet het antwoord luidenvliegtuigen, want die levert
Amerika en die kunnen via den Pacific nog geleverd worden, zonder
te veel gevaar
Waarmede dus practisch een einde is gemaakt aan den twist slag
schip of vliegtuig
Het is jammer voor onze marine ook wij hadden gaarne meerdere
groote slagschepen gehad ter bescherming van onze olie-havens, doch
vliegtuigen zijn in dezen modernen oorlog voorloopig nog van veel
grooter nut gebleken dan oorlogsschepen, tenzij men zóó sterk is dat
men blokkeeren kan
