Dit feit bracht den Boeren de genadeslag toe, want een
nieuwe aanval zou den overwinnaar den volgenden dag in het
kamp brengen.
Cronjé begreep dat alles verloren was; den 27en Febr. om 7
uur v.m. besteeg hij zijn paard, liet zich naar Roberts brengen
en gaf zich onvoorwaardelijk over. Met hem vielen 4080 man,
47 officieren en 6 vuurmonden in handen van den vijand.
"Van den 18en tot den 27en Februari hadden de belegerden
niet meer dan 80 dooden en 160 gewonden gehad, een uiterst
laag cijfer, dat wijst op de geringe uitwerking van het moderne
geschut op verspreid opgestelde troepen, terwijl er uit blijkt
dat vooral hongersnood en ziekte tot de overgave dwongen 1).
De Engelschen verloren van den 16en tot den 27en Febr. 1598
man aan dooden, gewonden en vermisten, w.o. 104 officieren;
bijna 10000 paarden, muildieren en ossen waren van uitputting
bezwekenten slotte bedroeg het aantal van de in het hospitaal
opgenomenen niet veel minder dan 16 van de geheele sterkte.
Roberts betaalde zijn overwinning wel duur, maar niet te
duur, omdat het ontzet van Kimberley en de capitulatie van
Paardeberg een einde maakten aan een reeks nederlagen en den
toestand der Engelschen ten hunnen voordeele wijzigden.

rather high. The result was that before they could gain comparative shelter, some 80
yards back, their commanding officer was wounded and they had suffered rather severely.
The trenching party then set to work about 10 yards in rear of the front rank, which
lay in the open for nearly two hours at 80 yards from the enemy's trench, keeping up
so hot a fire at the flashes from the Boer lines that firing from the other side grew wild*
When I say that cover was taken behind a fold in the ground, it must not be supposed
that this was by any means complete protection I do not think that the difference between
the ridge and the crest was more than 18 inches; but the advantage of this slight swell
made all the difference to the firing line lying down. Without it they probably could
not have held their own at that short distance from the enemy; with it they not only
did so but made the Boer fire so unsteady that there were marvellously few casualties
among the working party, who standing up to dig, were, of course, pretty well exposed
during the early stages of their work.
