Future development will depend chiefly upon the elimination of dead
time and the continious and precise adjustment Of the fire-controllements
the eliminations of possibilities of personal errors, and the localisation of
responsibility for results. This indicates the development of automatic in
struments to perform all the fire control adjustments not requiring personal

Leger in den oorlog heeft verleend. T. o. v. de gemengde eenheden wordt
gezegd„there can be no doubt that the system of „class" companies
(niet-gemengde) is in accordance with Indian sentiment, and furnishes an
admirable basis both for internal organization, and ready expansion in time
of war."
The mutiny showed the dangers of „class" regiments and of a
limited field of recruitment, as nearly all the Bengali regiments
sooner or later threw in their lot with the mutineers, while the „mixed"
regiments of Madras and Bombay remained loyal and the situation was
saved by them."

Tijdens den oorlog moest men t. a. v. de strenge eischen een weinig
door de vingers zien en werden als belooning voor het dienstnemen, waar
toe „the whole machinery of the civil government1' in werking werd ge
bracht, ter beschikking gesteld groote uitgestrektheden irrigeerbaar terrein;
de landrente werd verminderd, terwijl voorts „most important of all in
dealing with Orientals, honours and rewards were distributed on a liberal
scale."
Vermelding verdienen verder: „The Austrian plan of campaign '14.
„The German plan of campaign" en „Hindenburg's second offensive in
Poland."
In „The limited objective", een antwoord op het art. in het April
nummer geeft Schr. als zijn meening te kennen, dat juist „the attack with
a limited objective is on the contrary inherent in the very nature of prepara
tion for the final decisive attack as practised bij the masters of war."

tionen der chw. Off. Gesellschaft zur Reorganisation des Heerwesens"
wordt o. a. aangegeven: „Geht man aber daran, die Armee neu zu gestal
ten, so musz man sich vor Augen halten, dasz sie in Blick auf eine ganz
klar bestimmte Angabe ausgebildet und ausgeriistet werden musz, und
nicht für alle erdenkliche Situationenwollen wir letzteres so werden wir
stets nur halbes erreichen."
„Kriegslehren" geeft aan, dat men aan Fr. zijde vóór den oorlog het
verbruik van mun. schatte op 500 schoten per stuk en per dag, doch
dat dit veel te laag was geschat. Een der grootste vraagstukken
was dan ook de aanvulling van mun., vooral aan de zijde der Centralen,
toen de grondstoffen begonnen te ontbreken. „Schwefel und Stickstoff
spielten eine besondere Rolle; als das Pulverprogramm durchgeführt war,
wurde der Stahl knapp." Ziedaar ook ons voorland, als de industrie in
Indië zich niet krachtig ontwikkelt; zwavel is er genoeg, doch stikstof en
