due probably to the influence of staged attacks where plenty of time was
available."
Verder gaat Schr. na of het gewenscht is in de Afd. veldgeschut en Hw.
samen te voeren en komt tot de conclusie, dat deze organisatie inderdaad
de voorkeur verdient, vooral m. h. o. op de samenwerking tusschen inf.
en art. en bij den aanval. Alleen t. b. v. de opleiding zullen de Hw.
afzonderlijk moeten worden geoefend. De aandacht zij gevestigd op de
meening van den Schr., dat bij gebruik van betrouwbare radioverbinding
tusschen inf. en art. „we will find our art. displaying itself to the front
long before it has lost range, merely in order to maintain contact with
its infantry".
„The experiment of equiping a light regiment of field art. with tractors"
behandelt een proef in deze richting genomen. „Early in the experiment
it was found a mixed horse and tractor organisation was not practical
and the horses were never after used for the purpose for wich originally
issued". Op het oogenblik voldoen beide soorten van beweegkracht niet
geheel en al. Verschillende eischen worden in beschouwing genomen als
betrouwbaarheid eenvoud in het gebruik beschikbare hoeveelheid be
sparing aan pers. enz. Schr. wijst er op, dat vanzelfsprekend alle offn een
grondige opleiding in de behandeling van motoren zullen moeten krijgen,
reeds op de opleidingscholen. T. a. v. de personeels-besparing wordt gezegd
„Tractor power is economical in manpower required for its operation.
If operated by untrained or poorly disciplined personnel, it is very
extravagant in manpower required for its maintenance. It is probable
that the transportation and impedimenta actually necessary is greater in
a Division whose Art. Brigade is tractor-drawn than in one whose art.
is horse-drawn".
In „Discussions" wordt kritiek uitgeoefend op het art. „A study-types
proportions of proj. and fuses enz.". Waar de Schr. van dit laatste artikel
te kennen geeft „smoke shells are not tactically used against either mat.
or pers.", wordt hem tegengeworpen, dat de Am. met zooveel succes het
witte phosphor hebben gebruikt. De meening dat Gas shell will probably
not be used on account of the difficulties it would cause our troops"
wordt evenmin gedeeldintegendeel „The army in the future
that uses the most gas efficiently will wi n". Schr. wenscht
daarom een grondige bestudeering en oefening in het gebruik van gas terrein-
strooken, welke de vijand met gas onbegaanbaar wil maken, kunnen wor
den doorloopen door de troepen, wanneer zij maskers gebruiken. Het gas zal
dus onze troepen niet hinderen „unless we make our troops afraid of gas by
failing to practice with it in peace on the score that it is too dangerous."

J. U.S. A. Nov. „Aircraft versus dreadnoughts" geeft in het kort de
gevolgtrekkingen, welke zijn te maken t. a. v. de resultaten verkregen
bij het werpen met bommen op enkele ex. Duitsche oorlogsschepen aan.
Hieruit zij overgenomen: „Explosions 40 to 60 feet below the surface are
more disastrous to ship's plates than those at or just below the surface.
This would point to the advisability of" using bombs for under-water
attacks in preference to attacks by shells against the structure of the
ships." Omtrent de zóne, vanwaar uit een vliegmachine kans heeft bij het
werpen met bommen treifers te verkrijgen wordt gezegd: „This zone in
which the plane must be for effective firing is always the exact size of
the danger zone of the target and will remain so as long as the gravity is
the force utilized to carry the bomb ,o the target". Schr. geeft verder te
kennen, dat in de eerste toekomst „torpedo-carrying planes" zijn te ver
wachten. Tav. de kustverdediging wordt medegedeeld:
„for coast defense, aircraft are indispensable and are
weapons of the first magnitude. With the preponderance of
aircraft resting with the defense, as it naturally would (het is te hopen,
dat dit ook voor ons geldt) the attack has not only been carried 75-100 miles
