Het zal nu een ieder duidelijk zijn, dat de kiem voor de thans
einde 1937 heerschende en steeds toenemende haat tusschen Ara
bieren en Engelschen reeds werd gelegd, toen Engeland twintig
jaren geleden de Arabieren bewust heeft bedrogen. En men vraagt
zich af of onze dagbladen wel het recht hebben te schrijven over
„een Arabische terreur in Palestina" in plaats van over „een
Engelsche terreur tegenover de Arabische volken" „Right or
wrong, my country", moge een slagzin zijn, waarmede ieder En-
gelschman kan instemmen voor ons buitenlanders is Engelands
houding ten aanzien van de Voor-Azische volken ronduit slecht
Den 5en Juni 1916 brak vrij onverwacht de Arabische opstand
los Sjarif Hoesein had drie zoons2) de oudste Ali, de thans
overleden Koning van den Hedjaz, de tweede Abdoelah, nu nog
Emir van Transjordanië, en de jongste Faisoel, den kortelings in
Zwitserland overleden Koning van Syrië en later van Irak. Geen
van drieën was door den Sjarif in zijn opstandsorganisatie gekend.
En omdat Hoesein wel een slimme autocraat was, maar geen oor
logsleider, bereikte de opstand spoedig het doode puntde Ara
bieren bezetten Mekka en de kust, de Turken hielden Medina
stevig vast en maakten aanstalten om vandaar naar Mekka op
te rukken.
Waar het bij opstanden van ongeregelde troepen vooral aankomt
op doorgaande activiteit en blijvende successen, en stilstand vrijwel
