telefonisch verzoek geen boot kon geven, en den volgenden dag
zou zien wat hij kon doen waarop Lawrence boos werd en de
andere kant de telefoon op de haak hing en Lawrence nog boozer
werd, tot vriendelijke Londensche klanken uit de telefooncentrale
overzweefden „It's no bluidy good, sir, talking to them fookin
water boogers Deze ware woorden herstelden het evenwicht
benevens een particuliere verbinding, zoodat Lawrence een half
uur later in Suez in het hotel kwam. Zoo kon hij den volgenden
dag in Cairo komen en de voedselvoorziening van Akaba regelen,
en ontmoette hij tevens voor de eerste maal generaal Allenby.
Het was een typisch onderhoud
Er werd nu overeengekomen, dat Faisoel met zijn gansche
Arabische macht naar Akaba zou gaan, en dat hij daar onder
Allenby's opperbevel zou strijden als leider van een afzonderlijke
strijdgroep, de Hedjaz Operations afdeeling, door de Engelschen
met hun voorliefde voor spelling-puns dra afgekort tot „Hedgehog",
egel.
Intusschen had Lawrence in Akaba den tijd om in afwachting
van Faisoel's komst de verdere operatiën te overdenken. Men
zou nu Syrië binnenrukken, een gebied met een allerwonderlijkste
dooreenmenging van volken, godsdiensten en rassen, welk geheel
eigenlijk alleen door de gemeenschappelijke Arabische taal werd
