easy to maintain heavy enfilading fire that is to say, fire which
sweeps a body of troops from a flank. Secondly, it makes possible
grazing instead of plunging fire. That is to say, the shells and bullets
of the defending troops, instead of plunging among the invaders' boats
at a steep trajectory, are skimming just above the surface of the water,
so that if they miss one target they may hit another.
One of the lessons of the last war was the value, sometimes, of
placing trenches low, where the troops can achieve grazing fire, rather
than in a „dominating" position.
The defending force in last week's manoeuvres had a number of
guns within 100 to 200 yards of the beaches. Other batteries were
farther back. The guns were carefully camouflaged, but artillery
officers did not consider that, in actual warfare, the fire of the warships
escorting the enemy would have an appreciable material effect, though
it might produce enough noise and dust to have considerable moral
effect.
Naval guns are at a great disadvantage when engaging a target that
is on land, because of range-finding and directional difficulties. The
guns of a vast flotilla of warships was ineffective against the Turkish
field guns during the landing on Gallipoli, and there is no evidence
that one of them was knocked out, despite the huge number of shells
the navy fired.
Shortly after the landing tne navy's guns became impotent as a
support of the landed force, because things were so confused ashore
that the navy was afraid that if it used its guns against infantry it
might be bombarding its own men a situation that is likely to occur
in any vigorously opposed landing.
8. UIT DE VAKTIJDSCHRIFTEN.
Tactiek.

In M.W. nr. 9 van Aug. 1938 levert gnl. v. Eimannsberger eenige beschou
wingen over de Fr. pantsertactiek. S. volgt eerst de gedachten van den Fr.
Gnl. Belpry en ontleent daaraan het volgende. Laatstgenoemde is van meening,
dat vaste schema's ondoelmatig zijn. Op eenigszins cynische wijze behandelt
hij de vuurwals als de gnl. st. maar zorgvuldig het programma ontwerpt,
dan is men tevreden. Het geheel is „ein richtiges, wohleingeübtes Ballett.
Dabei bemerkt man nicht, dasz dieses vortreffliche System in sich selbst
die Ursache des Miszlingens tragt, weil die Zeit, die man sich selbst laszt,
auch dem Feind zugute kommt". Om succes te behalen moet men juist
dat doen, wat de vij. niet verwacht.
De nieuwe techniek schenkt ons vele nieuwe mogelijkheden, zoodat het
verkeerd is om voor den toekomstigen oorlog voort te bouwen op de schema's
van het verleden. Bij toepassing van deze stelling wordt men wel eens
voor een fantast versleten, maar men vergeet „dasz die Traumereien von
gestem die Wirklichkeit von heute sind".
Frankrijks lot zal ook in de toekomst op den grond worden beslist, waarbij
het luchtwapen op de beste wijze kan medewerken, door in engen samen
hang met het leger „zur Vorbereitung und zur Durchführung der Schlacht"
te worden ingezet. Daar de zege op den grond slechts door den aanval
kan worden verkregen, moeten alle wapens zich met de meeste zorg op deze
gevechtshandeling toeleggen.
Om nu een aanval met kans op succes uit te voeren, is noch de geweer-
schutter noch de licht gepantserde vew. geschikt, doch de onbeschermde
infanterist moet door krachtige strijdmiddelen worden voorafgegaan en het
tactische aanvalsplan moet in overeenstemming met de behoeften van die
